This is nuts to me: 5lbs in one week? I haven’t been doing anything but eating paleo–not even exercising! I measured myself at the same time last week. This feels pretty awesome. Paleo ftw.

I’m about to embark on my first “cheat” day, which will look nothing like the 4HB cheat days that I used to partake in. I’m allowing myself cheese (primal), chocolate (primal), red wine (primal), and one food item that’s completely off the diet on Saturdays. Keeps me sane, folks!

Welcome to my Christmas tree of weight loss over the past few weeks (I had broken my scale). So I’ve started to cheat every once in a while during the week (including last night: beerrr), and I think that’s affecting my weight loss. Plus this includes the weight gain from spring break. Either way… it’s kind of frustrating to go three weeks to find that I gained body fat. Ugh. I’ve lost most of my weight in my legs, so that explains why my pants are starting to feel so loose.

For those of you who were wondering, yesterday was an April Fool‘s joke. I’m still on the diet and I didn’t have to go to the hospital for massive food consumption!

Onwards to refeed day!

Okay, I’m a little disappointed with how much I lost this month; I’ve lost 10.4lbs from 62 days ago, and 3.6 pounds since day 34. Not cool. I’m also going to start my period at some point though, probably this week, so I can try to shrug it off as water weight. Hopefully being away from the diet for a week will not kill my results (and maybe give my body the shock it needs)!

So this week I didn’t seem to lose a whole lot except for in body fat… which is actually the number that I care about most. I’m gaining inches in my arms and legs but I am still attributing that to climbing (I AM A BEAST! ).

Some people want graphs. Okay!

Until later today,

HE CHEATED! (Day 53)

One thing that frequently happens on this diet is that people lose hope. I’ve watched blogger after blogger give up, and when I tell my friends about 4HB many tell me that it sounds impossible. The truth is: 4 hour body is incredibly limiting. It’s not for everyone… but stick with it long enough and you will lose weight.

That said, I’m having mixed feelings about something that I discovered today. This whole time, the diet has been easier because I’ve been living with my very supportive boyfriend, Aaron. Aaron is 6’0, 152lbs, and is at 11% body fat; he doesn’t need to lose weight. He has been eating pretty much what I have for the past 54 days… or so I thought. Today he told me that he has been munching on cookie dough.

The perp.

I shouldn’t be upset about this. Aaron is at a very healthy weight and doesn’t need to be on the diet; he’s only doing it to support me and because he gained a little weight last semester (he has room to gain a lot more). I didn’t force him onto the diet, but I told him that 4HB was how I was going to change my lifestyle, and he could participate if he wanted to. Obviously he chose to partake.

Which brings us back to the cookie dough. I had believed all this time that I wasn’t the only one suffering through six days of the week. Part of it is that I’m jealous. I’m not a naturally skinny person so I know that if I began cheating on the diet, it would spiral out of control. Plus, cookie dough is something that I’ve consistently had on cheat day; it’s one of my favorite foods. Finally, I’m nervous that Aaron will start cheating more and more, and eventually get off the diet. It is much easier to live this way when you’re living with someone else doing it too.

Part of me feels like a huge jerk. It’s just a scoop of cookie dough, and I was completely content not knowing before Aaron chose to tell me. I think my negative reaction is mostly my anxiety getting a hold of me. I’m beginning to wonder: is anyone else doing 4HB with a spouse or loved one? How does the relationship play into the diet?

Food for today:

Turkey bacon, eggs, and egg whites (Breakfast).

Turkey sausage and sauerkraut (Lunch).

Shrimp stir fry (Dinner).

Until tomorrow,

Why Body Fat? (Day 52)

As I’ve stated previously, losing body fat has been the goal of this diet. But why? And how much? What does body fat look like?

First off, I started at 35.22% body fat, and I am now at 29.14%. Losing body fat is slow. It measures how fit one is, and how much muscle vs fat there is on one’s body.

Body fat sits differently on women than men. See below for the weight distribution (idk what’s up with her bra…):

High body fat
Low body fat

And for my male readers:

High Body Fat
Low Body Fat

While BMI suggests whether or not I’m “overweight” according to guesstimating governmental officials, measuring body fat is far more accurate. Thankfully, it doesn’t take too much more effort than weighing myself; I just need to have the patience to measure my extremities.

Where do you fall? My goal is 18-20% body fat.

Two hard boiled eggs, two egg whites (Breakfast).

My friend grabbing at my delicious salad and two chicken thighs (Dinner).

Bacon, carrots, beans, two chicken thighs, and salad (Dinner).

Until tomorrow,

Talking About Food… Food and Numbers (Day 50)

I realized earlier today that I’ve blogged about food for 51 days straight. That’s close to 15% of a year, or 39.8% of how long I’ve committed to do this diet. That’s pretty crazy to me… who on earth has that much to say about FOOD??

I decided when I started 4HB that I was going to keep to it until the end of the semester. I am still keeping to it, but I am starting to wonder what I am going to do after that goal. If I keep my current rate, I will lose an additional 8.47% body fat and 15lbs before the end of the semester (though the chance of that prediction being spot on, given plateaus etc, is imperfect). After that, I don’t want to continue losing much more weight (final goal is 18%-20% body fat). Ferriss doesn’t give examples of how to get off four-hour body and neither do his followers. I can’t imagine eating like this for the rest of my life. However, I could see taking a number of Ferriss’s concepts and switching to paleo. I see that as entirely doable.

Just some food for thought.

Real food:

Eggs, great northern beans, bacon, and veggies (Breakfast).

Lentils and veggies (Lunch).

Lean beef stir fry with lentils (Dinner).

Guys, I lost 10lbs!! That was my first weight-loss goal! I’m so, so freaking excited. I’m not worried about the gains in my arms because I’ve been climbing a lot. Time to celebrate properly with cheat day :D.

Considering I started my monthly today, I’m not at all upset with these numbers… minus my body fat going up. My guess is that the calculation was reacting to gaining .5″ in my hips, which is (hopefully) all water weight.

I’m off to celebrate belated Valentine’s Day! Happy cheat day, ya’ll!
